The first edition of this book was published in April 1985, and was the FIRST book published on Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (myalgic encephalomyelitis, chronic fatigue syndrome). Since then, there have been many changes in management, and this edition is more than 50% different from the previous fourth edition.
Unlike other books, the emphasis in this book is what the patient and doctor should do to aid better recovery. Much is required of the patient on a day-to-day basis, and advice in this book is specific. Many patients have felt that the previous editions of this book have motivated them, and given them a precise plan for recovery.
The five-step plan for better recovery has been used on hundreds of patients worldwide over many years. This book is a product of the collective experiences and recovery of these patients. It is based on what can be done now rather than scientific hypotheses.
The strength of this book is that it was the first book to give a precise plan for recovery. It has lasted 23 years whilst many other books have gone out of print. The fact that it is loved by patients and is the only book in its fifth edition is a testament to its common sense and scientific validity.
Many infections (such as chronic Lyme Borreliosis (formely known as LymeDisease), chronic Toxoplasmosis and Brucellosis) reach a stage when antibiotic treatment is not successful. When this happens, the illness is managed as Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome, and the details for such management are in this book.
